2.2 Solid Waste Reduction
EXAMPLES OF HOW WE ADHERE TO THOSE GOALS AT WATKINS NATURE CENTER
Composting Program
Our composting exhibit allows park visitors to read about the benefits of composting. At the exhibit, visitors can read an interpretive sign and also take information along with them in the brochure box to help them get started at their own home. During our Cub Scout Program, students are asked to sort through prop food items and determine what is compostable and what is not. When students have lunches at our center, a bin is set up to collect compostable materials to be added to our composter. Our student volunteers also use the composter to eliminate food waste during animal care.
repurposing used materials into art projects
Watkins Nature Center offers nature crafts every month for ages 2-10. In these programs, students will reuse materials into these crafts, such as paper, egg cartons, and plastics.
