2.5 structures for environmental learning
At Watkins Nature Center we try to make every aspect of our center an opportunity for our visitors to learn. Students are able to hike our trails to learn about native plants and wildlife, participate in stream quality studies at our outdoor classroom, observe wetland species on our boardwalk, and look for frogs and salamanders in our center's ponds!
EXAMPLES OF HOW WE ADHERE TO THOSE GOALS AT WATKINS NATURE CENTER
Trails as Learning Experiences
Many of our programs and camps utilize our trails as on outdoor learning space. Topics addressed are habitats, adaptations, pollution impact, invasive species, birding, and healthy lifestyles.
Outdoor Classroom
Our Outdoor Classroom was built for us as an Eagle Scout Project from Troop 450. It is the gateway to our stream and features 5 spool tables. These tables are instrumental in our stream studies, as students are able to return from the stream and write down their observations. The stairs, also built by Troop 450, allows us access to the stream and has opened up a multitude of learning opportunities for students of all ages.
